Water Industry - Clean Water Sector Problems & Solutions

Problem Solution

(1) Failure of concrete tanking can lead to loss of water or the ingress of ground water. Either scenario can result in rapid deterioration in water quality.

Failure of concrete tanking

Internal repairs can be carried out using Monomix, a high build hand apply mortar.

For large scale repairs, Monomix WS applied using wet spray techniques is the ideal choice.

The entire surface can be overcoated with Cementitious Coating 851 for complete waterproofing and protection of existing concrete.

(2) Degradation of brick lined reservoirs and failure of pointing in structures, leading to leakage or the ingress of ground water and loss of water quality test certification.

Degradation of brick lined reservoirs

After reinstatement of defective pointing with Monolevel 844SP, brickwork can be fully waterproofed and damp-proofed using Cementitious Coating 851.

(3) Wear and tear of dams, weirs and spillways due to erosion, soft water attack and freeze/thaw attack.

Concrete cover over exposed aggregate caused by spalling and erosion can be reinstated with Monolevel 844SP.

An overall application of Cementitious Coating 851 waterproofs the concrete and protects it from further degradation.

(4) The life span of pipelines is limited by erosion and the effects of soft water. Steel pipelines may be affected by internal and/or external corrosion.

Erosion of water pipelines

The life span of concrete and cast iron pipes is extended by the factory application of Cementitious Coating 851. It forms a hard, highly alkaline coating which is approved for use in contact with potable water.

(5) Leakage of aqueducts, water channels and canals due to failure of the waterproofing system. Much of the infrastructure in the UK is now over 100 years old and showing signs of deterioration. Years of exposure to the flow of acidic moorland water can cause severe erosion.

Repairs can be easily carried out using Flexcrete’s mortars — such as Monomix and Monolevel 844SP, creating a newly sound structure.

(6) Manholes and inspection chambers need repairing and upgrading to improve security from unauthorised access.

Repair of manholes and inspection chambers

Manholes and inspection chambers can be re-cast with Fastcast — an ultra fast setting repair mortar. All access areas can be fully repaired and back in operation in as little as 24 hours.
